I'm not sure if I ever said it publicly, but when I bought my first Framework laptop I wondered if it could be the last laptop I ever buy. The reasoning was that the Framework is designed to be serviceable, so I could simply replace any parts that wore-out, became damaged or no longer met my needs over time instead of having to replace the machine entirely.
Unfortunately, Framework is comitted to supporting white supremacy, which threw a monkey-wrench in my plans to continue purchasing hardware from them (as well as promoting and recommending their products to others).
The first thought I had was to return the machine and use the refunded cash to buy a different machine from people who won't use my money to fund racism. However, when I contacted Framework they asked why I was returning it and when I explained to them why, they stopped talking to me.
So I thought a lot about what I could do. I really like the Framework 12, but I definitely can't continue to support the Framework company unless they wise-up. I could sell it on the used market but that doesn't really do anything to address the problem and I couldn't even write an effective listing for with without moral compromise ("for sale, one laptop from an openly-racist open hardware company...").
Then it hit me: open hardware.
Framework publishes design documents for most (all?) of the parts of their laptops, so if I can recreate these parts (or parts compatible with these designs), I could apply my original approach of replacing parts as they fail or become obsolete but without providing any additional resources to Framework to pass-on to racists.
So this is the plan. Over the winter I'm going to study the available design documents and begin to figure out what parts I can fabricate and how to fab or acquire the parts I cannot. I'll also share this work with anyone else in the position of being tricked into buying hardware from people who don't care enough about others to stop giving money to racists. Eventually we might even come up with enough replacement parts to produce a complete machine...
