If personal computers are "a bicycle for the mind", LLM's are SUVs*.
Both can get you where you're going, but a bicycle makes you stronger and healthier in the process while having little to no negative impact on other people or the world we all share.
An SUV maims and kills through it's clumsiness, consumes orders of magnitude of energy disproportionate to it's effectiveness and provides nothing but health deficits for both you and the people around you.
Riding a bicycle sharpens your mind and hones your senses.
Driving an SUV literally puts people to sleep.
A person fits onto bicycle, and a bicycle fits into the world.
An SUV surrounds a person and warps the world to fit around it.
A basic bicycle consists of a dozen moving parts which can be made by hand out of common materials. The bicycle is predictable, reliable and requires minimal maintenance to last for generations.
An SUV is made from thousands of parts which require an enormous supply chain to create and specialized tools, facilities and labor to assemble. It requires a constant supply of consumables and strictly-scheduled maintenance. Properly maintained, an SUV might last a decade or two, but most don't and even if they do, you'll be convinced that you need a bigger, more expensive, more resource-intensive SUV within a couple years.
There's enough resources in the world to provide every living person with a bicycle.
There's nowhere near enough resources in the world to provide even 10% of the people in the world with an SUV and everything else needed (fuel, roads, parking, etc.) to enable it.
The bicycle and the SUV descend from the same useful invention: the wheel. Their evolutionary paths diverged when it became acceptable for some to sacrifice the health and needs of others for the safety and convenience of the individual, or more specifically, the customer.
There may be times when something like an SUV is needed, but you'd be surprised how often a bicycle will do. If we were to put 10% of the resources into bicycles that we've put into SUV's, they could take us so much further than we could ever imagine and we would have a lot more time, money and resources to meet the remaining needs in ways that don't trade harming everyone to help one person.
* Sport Utility Vehicle. I'm lumping big luxury trucks in here because the are often primarily moving people and rarely doing "truck stuff".
